The answer is not to ditch the union which you are a member of, but to campaign in that union and seek to change the leadership in order to reflect the needs of the members. Usdaw isw no different to other unions in this respect. I often hear members of other unions saying the same thing about ditching it and joining another. The problem is that all unions suffer from a lack of democracy in some form or other and to a greater or lesser degree.

If every Usdaw member who is dissatisfied with the service they get was to fight to change the union, we could soon remove the obstacle, which is the current leadership.

Personally........................... I think that all union members need to get off their backsides when elections are due and shift the ones from the top and elect the ones that want to give the workers a decent future within the workplace. Too many are still seeing the union as just someone to support them in meetings and not the bigger picture

Now that the European Court of Justice has rule on this matter, the Union will have to revisit many of their agreements to ensure that employees are not 'discriminated' against.

It seems that Usdaw will have to change their own contracts with Usdaw employees to rectify this wrong application of the law!

Could not aggree more. It is a message filtered from the top down to the Area Organisers and Training Officers. Why? Beacuse USDAW is more concerned with revenue raising than championing workers' rights. who wants to rock the boat with industrial action when Tesco and Usdaw agree on paltry pay rises of 2%. Usdaw says we can influence with max membership, if that is the case why are stores with 95%+ still given 2%. No it all changed when HQ decided to negotiate nationally NOT regionally. So much for working class principles and Labour Party ethics.

Paid time for Trade Union training... Have you encountered problems regarding paid release for trade union training given by the TUC? If so, please post your experience on this site. Despite being covered by the law under TULCRA (Trade Union and Labour Consolidated Rights Act, and ERA (Employment Rights Act) the Partnership prevents, yes I mean PREVENTS US, from getting what the law covers us for. Why should we have 5 years experience as Reps before qualifying? There is no such condition in law. The Partnership is holding us back and preventing us from improving our terms and conditions; it is our Union and it is time we take matter into our hands and change the Partnership to suit us and not Tesco.

How long can the union hierarchy continue their undemocratic methods before members call enough? The practice of officials controlling the outcome of elections to the executive council and president is totally undemocratic. The role of the president and executive council is to scrutinise and challenge the senior officials. They cannot do this effectively if they are under the patronage of the senior officials.

Why should the governance of the union be less important than the governance of private companies such as banks and retailers?

If we can't have confidence in our decision making bodies, we cannot build a strong independent union which organises and campaigns with the members and for the members.

As a forum rep and usdaw rep in our store we go back to our members and let them know what has been agreed and what has not. anything that can not be answered/resolved in store goes to the sd forum and if it can not be answerd/resolved there then its passed on to the national forum. one rep from each store in your group can attend the sd forum. they are voted on by the forum reps and they are asked to report back issues from sd forum. if you feel that your store wont talk to you get yourself nominated for the store forum. one person off each department can go for it. speak to your personnel or group personnel manager. im sure they will help you or your shop steward. we advertise our next steps on all issues raised in our store forums. they are great and all staff know what is going on if they wish to participate. good luck and down feel down trodden. if you are an usdaw rep then shop stewards also have a seat on store forum and the shop steward that attends can then let you all no what is happening in the monthly team meetings. i hope this helps

If forum minutes are confidential to forum members it begs the question ' whose forum is it?' If members are not allowed to see what is being discussed they are worthless and will wither on the vine. Maybe the Company want this to happen, but it cannot be in the interest of the Union to allow this. Members should press their reps to take this up with the forum in the first instance and if no resolution is gained, we should campaign to get it changed. What have they got to hide?
