Presidential Election Farce 2006

Elections took place in February 2006 but only 9.5% of Usdaw's 341000 members took part in the ballot. This is a disgrace and allows the officials to control those members elected in this way. The election saw Jeff Broome, who has been on the Executive Council (EC) for 12 years take the President role. Mr Broome works for Boots Logistics as a full time shop steward. He is not subject to election in his workplace, because he was appointed by the Union Deputy General Secretary(now the General Secretary) and the Company Personnel Director, even though he didn't even work for Boots at the time!! This was as a result of a 'Partnership Agreement' which was imposed after the members rejected it in a ballot at the workplace.

Broome is a 'Puppet' and will not do anything to challenge the officials because his role as President and his position in Boots depends on his support for the General Secretary. Members should question him at every opportunity.

Pat Buttle who has been a member of the Usdaw Broadleft for many years, ignored the vote of Broadleft members and stood against the official Broadleft candidate, Terry Savage. Ms Buttle refuses to accept that her actions denied the Union the opportunity of electing a progressive President who would have challenged the Status Quo and campaigned for greater democracy and member involvement. Ms Buttle has since resigned from the Broadleft.

The next nominations for the President and Executive Council will be held in late 2008 with the elections taking place in early 2009. It is vital that members get involved and ensure that a progressive President and Executive Council working in the interests of the members are elected.
